Merino Fleece vs Synthetic Fleece
Synthetic fleece wins on two counts, and it’s worth being straight about them: it’s cheaper, and it dries faster after a soaking. Merino fleece wins on the rest. It resists odour naturally, so it survives several days of wear where polyester starts to smell after one. It doesn’t build static. It stays warm when damp, because wool fibres retain loft where wet synthetic collapses. And it doesn’t shed microplastic fibres into the water system every wash, which is now the main environmental objection to synthetic fleece. If you need something for one wet day, synthetic is fine. For a jacket worn all winter, wool is the better trade.
Where It Sits in a Layering System
A fleece is a mid layer — its job is trapping air, not blocking wind or rain. Worn over a thin Merino base layer it handles most Australian winter days on its own; under a shell it becomes cold-weather kit. What it isn’t is a substitute for a waterproof outer, and wearing it as one is the usual reason people conclude fleece “isn’t warm”.
